with pearls, and a row of pearls7 98 WILLIAM RUFUS, throughout the forehead. On reverse is a cross, enclosedbetween four curved lines. William Rufus is represented on their Great Seal, crowned with a garland-shaped diadem, formed of ajewelled circlet, terminating in five things, each sur-mounted with a ball. He wears their regal mantle, clasped on throat with a collar of pearls. In hisright hand he elevates the blade; in the left, the orbof empire. On reverse he’s on horseback, clad ina close fitting clothing of scaled armour, with a conicalhelmet on their head; keeping a lengthy lance, adorned witha swallow-tailed pennon, in the right hand, and bearinga small circular shield or buckler on his remaining arm. The legend round the seal is Willelmus Dei GratiaRex Anglorum in the reverse, Willelmus Dei GratiaDux Normanorum An evident proof this sealwas perhaps not created till the year 1096, whenever, havingobtained possession of Roberts dominions on mortgage,Rufus assumed the form of duke of Normandy.
