In order to overcome these difficulties theform of trolley wheel shown in the accom-panying illustration has been devised and isnow the standard type on all the overheadelectrical divisions of the New York, NewHaven & Hartford Railroad. The wheel ismade up of a cylinder of composition metal3 ins. in diameter, and with curved edges, which fit against 5-in. steel flanges whichare J in. thick and riveted through the bodyof the wheel. The tread for the wire is i-l-ins. wide, this large gage being employedin order to give to the wheel more playupon the trolley wire and thus prevent itfrom jumping at high speeds. The treadcan be easily replaced when worn out without renewingany of the other parts of the wheel.
